Beelitz Sanatorium
The Eerie Beauty of Ruins
Photography by Craig Robinson
Beelitz Sanatorium is located in a secluded forest area 30-40 minutes SouthWest of Berlin. The facility was built in 1900 to treat Tuberculosis patients and was later appropriated by the Soviets as a military hospital. Sprawling over 200 hectares of wooded area, the abandoned ruins are slowly being reclaimed by the elements. There is a profound effect on the psyche when you wander the vast, dilapidated halls and empty treatment rooms. Nature is slowly reclaiming these buildings, as evidenced by tree-lined rooftops, waterlogged hallways and peeling surfaces. These are images from the first in a series of photographic trips to Beelitz I have planned for this summer. Click here or on the photo above to view the images.
