EASTSIDE GALLERY:

TOTAL RENOVATION in 2009

The original Berlin Wall paintings were restored over the course of the year 2009.  Unfortunately, I arrived too late in Berlin to get photos of the entire original wall paintings before the jackhammers and chisels were set in motion, but I managed to walk along the wall and take detailed section photos of the last few hundred meters which are as of yet untouched by the reconstruction machine.  Some of those photos can be viewed on this site.

The East Side Gallery is the last remaining continuous section of the Berlin Wall.  Since the fall of the Wall, artists from around the world have come to Berlin to decorate the remaining wall segment with very interesting, iconic art which has become a part of the Berlin landscape as well as its history. Now it has been given a much-deserved facelift.

The reconstruction project was undertaken to reverse the effects of acid rain, decay, graffiti, etc. Many of the original wall artists returned to Berlin to recreate their original iconic works of art--just in time for the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Wall.

Over the course of the last year I documented the renovation of the East Side Gallery Section of the Berlin Wall in pictures. You can view select images from the photo documentary in the slide show on the left.

My humble efforts managed to attract the attention of the Russian media.  You can view the interview video on the left as well.
